La Crosse is the epitome of our current economic situation. Our city/county government is too large, our prison system is growing, our education system is poor, and the citizens are over taxed.
The City of La Crosse, WI screams for help with each mayoral election. The sad truth is the Mayor is nobody unless of a voting tie. It is the members of council that make the decisions and it is frustrating when the mayor position makes all the headlines rather than the individual council members. In the past, the city has had good mayors that were good at working with council to do good for the city, so the mayoral election's have understandably been heated debates. Hopefully, the current mayor can be like one of the great mayors of the past.
The City and County are over governed though. There are too many Chiefs, and so it appears, like our country, that nothing gets done as fast as it could. Do citizens even realize there are 17 members on the city council and 35 on the county board?
The City of Rochester has a total 7 council members, 6 districts voted in by there ward and the 7th is the council president voted by the whole city. It's no wonder IBM chose Rochester, MN over La Crosse, WI, less of a headache when dealing with city hall.
I have started this blog in hopes of leading community members to organizing a non profit to lead the citizens towards the goals they want. If the city is going to become better then it is up to the citizens to make changes and quit expecting the mayor is going to do it.
Will you participate in your local government? Will your local community benefit from your participation?
